Savasana (shah-VAH-sah-nah) is the final pose at the end of every yoga practice. It is one of the most important poses because laying quietly in stillness allows all of the previous poses (asanas) to integrate and resonate in your physical and energetic body. In other words, this pose is the ultimate “rest and digest” pose of the yoga practice; complimenting every other pose that you have done beforehand.
1. Stress Relief:
The body holds stress in the form of muscle contraction, or tension. Whether the source is emotional, intellectual, or physical, the result is the same. Learning to release tension by allowing yourself to fully rest is a valuable practice in the process of healing. As you lay on your back in Savasana, allow your muscles to melt into the floor, let your bones feel heavy, let your mind be quiet, and feel your breath flow in and out of you like a gentle wave.
After working in class to improve balance, strength, and flexibility, the final step is to surrender it all. When it is time for Savasana, there is no striving, no struggle, just being. It is an opportunity to surrender to the present moment and accept yourself just as you are.
3. Experiencing Peace:
When we release tension and surrender to the moment, we can then experience peace. Because daily life is filled with various "to dos,” it’s easy to forget what a few moments of peace and stillness feels like. Savasana is an invitation for you to pause for peace.
4. Connecting With Your Natural Rhythm of Breath:
When you lay soft on your yoga mat, let your belly soften and feel your lungs inspire themselves to subtly expand and contract. Note the soft rise and fall of your heart space and naval center. Breathing is something we easily take for granted, but Savasana is the time to savor how effortless and nourishing each breath is as you rest quietly
